Today, we checked out the Georgia Ensemble Theatre’s Summer Conservatory program. Basically, these are some very cool acting camps for kids from 3rd grade to the 12th grade. I had a chance to visit the camp on Tuesday to shoot 2 stories: Improv and Voice. Let me tell you these are some awesomely talented kids! (did I just make up a word??)
Anyway, there are all kinds of programs at all kinds of prices. Some of the programs start at about $100!

For this week’s Cool Camp, we’re headed east about 50 miles. Why? Because we’re going to show you a very special camp for kids with special needs. These children are facing serious illnesses and other physical, emotional and life challenges.
Camp Twin Lakes offers a number of camps that specifically target one demographic. I think my favorite one is called Camp Twitch and Shout which is for kids with Tourette Syndrome! I really LOVE that name (I think it’s always important to have a sense of humor!) But this week we’re going to focus on Camp To Belong because its focus is on reuniting siblings who have been separated by foster homes or adoptive parents.
I’m headed to Rutledge, Georgia, tomorrow to shoot the stories that you’ll see on Friday! Bring a tissue, I guarantee you’ll need it.
And as always, if you know of a “cool camp” please send me an email: mike.brooks@cbsatlanta.com

Today we took viewers to a nature camp! Camp Kingfisher at the Chattahoochee Nature Center has all kinds of programs for all kinds of kids! Steven White (our photographer) and I had a lot of fun with the kids. We learned about a plant that will take away the itch of poison ivy. We learned about animals living on the Chattahoochee. We even got to play a game of “Tag You’re It” in canoes!

I’m really having a lot of fun with this Cool Camps thing! So far I’ve been able to cook pasta with some 6 year olds (Camp Can-I-Cook), play guitar like I was a rock star (Camp Jam), and play a computer game designed especially for me (iD Tech Camp). Okay, so the computer game was a little old school.
Anyway, this week I’m headed back to nature at Camp Kingfisher! This is a very cool camp where kids canoe, swim, and learn about nature.
Hopefully, we’ve been able to give you some ideas on how your kids can spend their summer. Some of the camps are a little pricey, but others are very reasonable. I’m getting lots of inquiries from parents, so please let me know if you have any questions about a particular camp.
What’s next? How about a camp for kids with disabilities or a circus camp? Who knows, I might even put on a tutu at ballet camp!!

Got kids that love computers?? Boy do I have the perfect camp for them! This week I visited the iD Tech Camp at Emory University and met some very cool kids. These campers are programing in C++ (I think!), designing their own web pages, programming their own computer games, and building their own robots!
Tune in Friday when we visit iD Tech Camp! It’s a very “cool camp!”
Of course, if you miss Better Mornings Atlanta you can always watch the stories on our web site: www.cbsatlanta.com/bettermornings

I had a really great time visiting Camp Jam. This summer camp teaches kids how to be a rock star. You learn how to perform on stage, handle the “business” side of music, and you learn how to design your own CD covers! Most of all, you get to work with real musicians including Jim Peterik, who wrote “Eye of the Tiger!” Can you name the band he is in??

Also, this young musician is Daniel Newman. He’s a 9th grader at Centenial H.S. Daniel was chosen to play a solo that will be turned into the largest music video in history! Very cool!!

Our second Cool Camp is truly a cool camp. We’re headed to Mtv’s Camp Jam where kids learn how to be rock stars. They sing, they dance, they wear cool clothes, and they play cool instruments. I’m going to bring my clarinet just in case they need me up on the stage!
You can watch the stories on Friday!
And if you missed our first Cool Camp, Camp Can-I-Cook, we have the stories right here: www.cbsatlanta.com/bettermornings
